On the 30th of June of 2018 we released our first record, both in physical (CD) and digital, alongside a manifesto where we shared our thoughts on the way we communicate and consume music in the actual internet era from our point of view as independent artists.

We decided that 2018 was going to be the year when we would try to innovate not only on the way we make music but also on how we communicate, promote and listen to it. So guided by that spirit, we decided to start making things differently.

Since that 30th of June of 2018:

  • We have sent a total of 460 hand-written postcards. We decided to give the digital version of our first record away as a present to everyone who wanted it, but for us to be able to do that we needed a postal address. The result? We have sent a total of 460 hand-written postcards to each and everyone of you who asked for it. The only thing we can say is: Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of our heart because the gift has been mutual: you have made us feel, for the first time in a long time, less alone in this world.

  • We have been able to meet so many of you in the almost 50 concerts we've played this year. We have shared unforgettable and magical moments (sometimes with tears involved, others with wine and long conversations about art, internet, politics...). We've had the opportunity to discover places and people who have greatly inspired us and for that we want to thank you.

  • We have organized our first festival: London Art Festival One, because, as we've already said, we want to make things differently, we want to create our own "scene" and most of all, we want to get together and create stuff. You can read all about it here.

  • We have published approximately 55 pieces of video-art: Our kind of tour-diary called Pieces of Northwest, Mariuca's dance improvisations in Miniatures and the 8mm films originally recorded by Ignacio's father and grandfather and reinterpreted in Excerpts.

  • We've had the pleasure and honour to collaborate with some of our favorite artists in our music video for Sun directed by Inés Quijano and Javier Piera, in this photoshoot by the photographer Ignacio Hergueta, in this dance video about femininity for one of our favorite publications Chappelle Magazine and in the new and improved music video for Look at Me directed by Mario Pinedo and featuring the talented dancer Nadia Barrasa. All these collaborations are born out of our intention of transforming Northwest into something larger than music: a lab where different forms of art can come together and interact.

  • Nowness has premiered the documentary Hidden Glances. Documentary directed by Gonzalo Hergueta in which Northwest has been very involved: Mariuca wrote the script and Ignacio wrote the music score. Furthermore, it has been selected as Best Content of the web in 2018.

We have worked very hard in 2018, a year we could baptise as "The year of experiments" but for us it has been more precisely the "most human" year since 2015 when we took a great risk and decided to devote our entire lives to art and music. It has been a human year because we have been able to conect human to human and have felt very supported. Because of that, we want to thank you.

Today we have decided to make our first record public on the internet. These months in private have been magical and intimate, but we consider that it's only fair that the rest of the world can have access to our music because, at the end of the day, that's what we truly want. So now you can find it in Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud and a few other music services.

Today we're also releasing a new music video for London, our favorite song of the album and the favorite of many of you. This is probably the hardest we've ever worked on a song and on a video and we hope you like it as much as we do. It's directed by Ignacio Simón (one half of Northwest) and we feel honoured to have some images in it recorded by the great photographer and artist Álvaro Gómez-Pidal (with whom we're currently collaborating in another awesome video). You can watche it here.

Lastly, we want to wish you a very happy new year and join the list of good intentions for the next year:
In 2019 we, Northwest, commit to make more and better art and continue the search of new ways of innovating. You already know we're only two people (we still haven't found any manager, record label or any other corporate help) so if you want to help us, you can do it here.

Thank you so much for this year and for being on the other side,
Much love,
Mariuca & Ignacio (Northwest)
